How do I update DLS-140 firmware?

Before you start

  • Get the firmware from us. The right version depends on how your DLS-140 is installed (for example, standalone or paired with an ISAT-200A), so we supply firmware per aircraft. Don't reuse a file from another aircraft or an old email. Contact support@skytrac.ca with the aircraft registration, the DLS-140 serial number and the current firmware version.
  • Check the current firmware version. Connect to the web interface (see How do I access the DLS-140 web interface?).
  • Prepare the laptop.
    • We recommend Windows 11 and Google Chrome.
    • Unzip the package and save the files to a folder on the laptop.
    • Disconnect from any VPN.
  • Use stable power. Put the aircraft on ground power for the whole update. Turning the DLS-140 off part-way through can leave it unrecoverable, and it would then have to be returned for repair.
  • Save the current settings (03.xx only). On the Configuration tab, press the download button at the top right to save a copy of the current configuration.

You can update the unit in the hangar. To confirm satellite signal afterwards, the aircraft needs to be outside with a clear view of the sky.

Update A: the unit is already on 03.xx firmware

  1. Connect to the DLS-140 Wi-Fi (network name DLS-140- followed by the serial number, password skytrac!) or by Ethernet.
  2. Go to 192.168.111.1 and log in with skytrac / skytrac.
  3. Open the Configuration tab and find the Firmware Update section.
  4. Click Choose File and select the .raucb file from the package.
  5. Click Upload. If an Update button appears after the upload, press it.
  6. Watch the progress bar for errors. The update takes several minutes, and the unit restarts on its own when it's done.
  7. Reconnect, log in, and check that Firmware Version under System Info shows the new version.

The 03.xx interface only accepts .raucb files. If it accepts the file, it is the right type of file.

Update B: converting a unit from the earlier SkyLink firmware to 03.xx

This is done in two stages.

Stage 1: load the conversion file

  1. Connect to the unit's Wi-Fi (network name Skylink-…, password on the unit label) or by Ethernet.
  2. Go to 192.168.111.1, click Login (top right) and log in with admin / admin.
  3. Open Advanced from the left-hand menu.
  4. Under System Update, click Choose File (or Browse…) and select update.tpz from the conversion folder in the package.
  5. Click Upload Firmware.
  6. Wait up to 20 minutes and don't turn the unit off. The unit restarts during this stage.

Stage 2: load the 03.xx firmware

  1. The Wi-Fi network is now called DLS-140, and its password is skytrac!. Connect to it.
  2. Go to 192.168.111.1. You should see a plain page with a Choose File button and an Upload & Install button. If the old SkyLink page appears instead, force a reload with Ctrl + Shift + R (Cmd + Shift + R on a Mac).
  3. Click Choose File, select the .raucb file (for example, skytrac-bundle-dls-140-03.02.08.raucb), then click Upload & Install.
  4. The page won't show progress. Wait several minutes for a new network named DLS-140- followed by the serial number to appear (for example, DLS-140-0000-158A).
  5. Connect with the password skytrac!, go to 192.168.111.1 and log in with skytrac / skytrac. The interface now has Dashboard, Network, Configuration and Diagnostics tabs.

Check the result

  • The Dashboard shows the new firmware version.
  • ICCID numbers appear for both Cellular and Satellite. If either is blank, contact Customer Support.
  • On the Configuration tab, Routing Preference shows Cellular Primary and Firewall is set to unrestricted, unless SKYTRAC has given you different settings for your aircraft.

This conversion is one-way. Once converted, the unit can't be returned to the earlier firmware in the field.


After any update

  • Carry out the functional tests in the ESB, and record the ESB number, its revision and the firmware version in the aircraft records as the ESB instructs.
  • If the unit is paired with an ISAT-200A, load the ISAT-200A firmware and parameter file we supplied.
  • Take the aircraft outside and check that cellular and satellite signal bars appear.
If the update fails
  • Upload fails or stops part-way:
    • The file should be unzipped and saved on the laptop's own drive, not in OneDrive or a network folder.
    • Use the right file type for the interface: .raucb on 03.xx, .tpz on SkyLink.
    • Use Chrome, and disconnect from any VPN.
    • Try once more, then stop and contact support.
  • Can't open the web interface: see the web-access FAQ.
  • The unit doesn't come back (no Wi-Fi network, or the LED stays red): wait at least 20 minutes, then contact support before power-cycling it.
    • This advice is my recommendation, based on ESB0259's warning that powering off during the update requires an RMA. No source gives a recovery procedure, so engineering should confirm whether a power cycle after 20+ minutes is safe.
