How do I get logs off a DLS-140?
This process only works on DLS-140 devices running firmware 03.xx or newer.
Steps
- Power on the DLS-140 and wait about 5 minutes for it to finish starting up. The status LED should be steady blue.
- Connect your laptop to the DLS-140, using either:
- Wi-Fi: the network name starts with DLS-140- followed by the serial number, and the password is skytrac!
- Ethernet: use the CAB0397 maintenance cable, with the laptop set to obtain an IP address automatically.
- Open a web browser and go to 192.168.111.1.
- Log in with username skytrac and password skytrac.
- Open the Diagnostics tab and scroll down to the Logs section.
- Choose the log type (see below).
- Set the Start Date/Time and End Date/Time in UTC. Cover the period when the problem happened. If we've given you dates, use those.
- Click Download and wait for the file to save. The unit builds the log before it downloads, which can take a few minutes. Keep the page open until the file has saved.
- Repeat steps 6 to 8 for each log type, one at a time.
Collecting three logs usually takes about 15 minutes, most of it spent waiting for the logs to generate.
Which logs to download
| Log | What it covers |
|---|---|
| SYSTEM | The main system journal. Use it for general troubleshooting. |
| MESSAGES | Network communication and system services, including PPP and firewall activity. |
| SATELLITE | The Iridium modem and satellite communication. |
| GPS | The GPS service and position reporting. |
| DMESG | Low-level hardware and start-up messages. |
If we haven't asked for specific logs, download SYSTEM, SATELLITE and MESSAGES.
Good to know
- Collect logs soon after the event. The DLS-140 keeps about 500 MB of log history and removes the oldest entries automatically as it fills.
- Logs survive a restart and a factory reset, so you can still collect them after either.
- Keep the date range to a few days. Long ranges take longer to build. If a download seems to stall, try a shorter range.
- The logs are for our engineers. They aren't intended for review on your side, so please send them as they are.
Send them to us
Email the log files to support@skytrac.ca. Please include:
- the aircraft registration
- the DLS-140 serial number
- the date and time (UTC) of the problem, and a short description of it
If the files are too large to email, zip them or ask us for an upload link.
