# How long does my RockAIR run on its internal battery?

**Around eight hours**, based on a one minute Iridium reporting interval.

Actual endurance varies with how the unit is configured. A slower reporting interval and different GPS settings will both extend it.

### How to tell the unit is on battery

Check the indicator beneath the green power button. An intermittent green flash means the unit is running on its internal battery, so external power is not reaching it. A solid green light means external power is connected.

### Charging the battery

The battery recharges whenever the RockAIR is connected to USB power or another external power source, and the charging indicator flashes while external power is connected.

Charge the unit fully before using it for the first time.

If you power the unit over USB, the adaptor must be able to supply at least 1.3 A at 5 V. The RockAIR can draw up to 1100 mA at 5 V while the battery is charging, so an underrated adaptor may not keep up.
