# What is the IONode?

The IONode is a flight data monitoring recorder. It captures aircraft data such as position, altitude, airspeed, engine performance and fuel flow, stores it onboard, and makes it available to the ground.

### How the data reaches the ground

- Over Wi-Fi, once the aircraft is on the ground
- On a USB stick fitted to the unit
- Over the Iridium satellite network, but only when the IONode is connected to a satellite transceiver such as a SkyNode

The IONode is not a satellite transceiver in its own right and does not support voice calls. Where satellite capability is needed, it works alongside a SkyNode.
