Where should I position my RockAIR in the aircraft?

The RockAIR's Iridium, GPS and cellular antennas are all inside the top of the casing. For a good signal the unit must sit upright, with a clear line of sight of the sky.

Choose a position

The ideal position is a flat part of the glareshield with a clear view of the sky.

Once switched on, the RockAIR begins looking for a GPS signal. If the unit is new, or has not been used for a while, this can take a few minutes. A unit in regular use will usually find a signal within seconds.

Electrically heated windshields will attenuate GPS, Iridium and cellular signals. If your aircraft has one, bear this in mind when choosing a position.

Secure the unit with the Quick Release Clip

The Quick Release Clip is a small U-shaped plastic holder that can be fitted wherever you choose, to hold the unit in place.

  • To attach the RockAIR, align the left-hand side with the clip and push the right-hand side until it clicks into place.
  • To detach it, push the right clip away from the unit and lift the RockAIR out.

The clip is not required for the RockAIR to work. Please note that SKYTRAC provides no guidance or certification for installing the clip in a manner considered permanent.

Connect power

The RockAIR is designed to run on external power. It can be powered either through the micro-USB cable or through the 4-pin connector on the back of the unit, so it helps to choose a position within reach of a power source.

If you are using the USB cable, use a reputable adaptor that can supply at least 1.3A at 5V DC.

The internal battery is a backup for when external power is lost, and gives up to around eight hours of operation when the unit is transmitting over Iridium once a minute. Actual runtime depends on your report frequency and GPS settings, so expect less if the unit is reporting more often.

The battery recharges whenever the unit is connected to power. Charge it fully before first use.
