How do I update the firmware on an ISAT-200A?

ISAT-200A firmware is loaded from a USB memory stick using the unit's own front panel menu. No laptop or cable is needed.

Always follow the Engineering Service Bulletin. Every firmware release is issued with its own ESB, included in the zip file our team sends you. The ESB is the controlling document. It states the exact version, the labelling and log book requirements and the functional test for that release. The steps below are for general reference only.

Before you start

  • A blank USB memory stick, formatted FAT32.
  • The firmware zip file from SKYTRAC, containing the firmware image and the ESB. Firmware distribution is controlled by Client Services, so it is not available as a public download.
  • A SKYTRAC Software Number and Version label, if the ESB calls for one.

Load the firmware

  1. Extract the firmware image from the zip file. It will be a .img file.
  2. Copy the image onto the USB memory stick. It should be the only file on the stick.
  3. Apply power to the ISAT-200A.
  4. Insert the USB memory stick into the ISAT-200A front panel.
  5. Using the front panel button, navigate to System > FW Upgrd, then to the firmware version you are loading.
  6. Press and hold the front panel button to select that version and begin the upgrade.

Do not remove power from the ISAT-200A, and do not remove the USB memory stick, while the upgrade is in progress. The ISAT-200A checks that the file is intended for an ISAT-200A and that the firmware is compatible with what is already installed, then reprograms itself and reboots.

If you are not familiar with the front panel menu, a single press and release scrolls through the menu one item at a time, and pressing and holding selects an item. See How do I navigate the ISAT-200A front panel menu?

Confirm the update

  1. Navigate to Info > FW Ver.
  2. Press and hold the button to select.
  3. The ISAT-200A displays the new firmware version.

Then carry out the functional test, labelling and log book entries set out in the ESB for that release.

If FW Upgrd does not appear in the menu

The FW Upgrd option is only shown when the ISAT-200A can see at least one valid firmware image with a .img extension on an inserted USB drive. If it is missing, check that the image was extracted from the zip and copied to the stick, not left inside the zip.

To check the stick itself, go to System > Test > USB Mem. USB CONN means the unit can communicate with the stick. NO USB means it cannot see it, or no stick is inserted.

The front panel USB port supplies up to 100mA, so a memory stick that draws more than that may not be recognised.

Will I lose the unit's settings?

No. Configuration parameters are maintained across firmware upgrades.

Note that the display goes into sleep mode and turns off after five minutes. Pressing the front panel button turns it back on.
